About
MY BACKGROUND
My research focuses on how popular entertainment narratives (e.g., television shows, movies, and books) can help adolescent and young adult cancer survivors cope with the psychological consequences of the disease and its treatment. As a trained journalist, my goal is to understand the 5 Ws (and 1 H) of this phenomenon:
-
For whom stories are helpful (i.e., are there differences across demographic indicators?)
-
Which stories are helpful (i.e., do they have to feature cancer?)
-
When and where stories are helpful (i.e., in what stage of the cancer continuum?)
-
Why and how stories are helpful (i.e., which psychological mechanisms?)
My ultimate goal is to improve psychosocial health among young adult cancer survivors and their social networks. I believe that, informed by the above research, creating a media-based intervention for survivors and their social networks could achieve this goal.
I bring the following approach to my research and my professional life: I am an energetic, upbeat and self-motivated team player with excellent oral and written communication. I believe that a rising tide lifts all boats, and I enjoy sharing my experiences and expertise with colleagues. I am also passionate about developing and mentoring the next generation of researchers and health communication professionals.
